58th BFI LFF - The Drop

Based on a screenplay from Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone), The Drop is a new crime drama from Michaël R. Roskam, the Academy Award nominated director of Bullhead. The film follows a lonely bartender called Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy), who works in the underworld of Brooklyn bars, which are known for funneling cash to local gangsters known as "money drops". Under the heavy hand of his employer and cousin Marv (James Gandolfini), Bob finds himself at the center of a robbery gone wrong, and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood's past.

A bleak noir, The Drop is shot void of any of the primary colours - thus creating an atmosphericly murky and sparse landscape. Roskam has excelled in building the perfect backdrop for this Brooklyn underworld. I was immeditely drawn in.

An undertsated but enthralling thriller, which I found to be reminiscent of Mystic River. Character and dialogue lead this film, and the action is somewhat secondary. Lots of 'action movie' buffs will consequently be left  a little cold, as this film is far more nuanced than a simple 'shoot 'em up', gore driven Hollywood movie. So if that is what you are after - be forewarned.

As an actor, Tom Hardy has always been a conundrum for me! Genius or lazy? Well, I have finally decided. His monotone delivery is a well used trick that masks his truth, and the twists come, not due to the clever writing, but from how we percieve Bob. Obviously massively thanks to the deep complexity that is woven into Hardy's characterisation of Bob. A lesser actor would not have succeeded.

The Drop also delivers James Gandolfini's last screen performance - and a fantastic one at that! It seems poetic that the man best known for The Sopranos is last seen in a great mob movie.

A smart crime drama full of suspense... see it!
