is the film is an adaptation of an Oscar-winning documentary about a lesbian couple; Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore) and Stacie Andree (Ellen Page) and their fight for justice.

A decorated New Jersey police detective, Laurel is diagnosed with cancer and wants to leave her hard earned pension to her domestic partner, Stacie. However the county officials, Freeholders, conspire to prevent Laurel from doing this. Hard-nosed Detective Dane Wells (Michael Shannon), and activist Steven Goldstein (Steve Carell), unite in Laurel and Stacie's defence, rallying police officers and ordinary citizens to support their struggle for equality.

Julianne Moore gives an uncompromising performance; masterfully charting the degeneration of Laurel’s health, and her resolve for justice. Michael Shannon and Steve Carell both contribute fantastic characterisations, but at the core of this film, the two leading actresses thrive. Moore and Page have an easy and very real chemistry on screen, their connection so believable, that I was gripped quite simply, by their beautiful story of true love.

An undeniably moving portrayal of a landmark civil rights battle - thank God for people like Laurel Hester! I think that Freeheld is an incredibly important film about equality, and courage in the face of discrimination, and a must see for all human beings. Rating:
