Hitchcock

Non-fiction book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho by Stephen Rebello has been adapted to create, Hitchcock, a film that follows the relationship between director Alfred Hitchcock (Anthony Hopkins) and his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren) during the making of Psycho.

While the Hitch is enjoying the success of his picture, North By Northwest, he is looking to find his next project. This is proving to ba a problem, until he stumbles across Robert Bloch’s novel, Psycho - a tale of madness and murder. As Hitchcock endeavour to bring the book to the big screen, he meets resistance from all corners, including his collaborator and wife Alma Reville.  The heart of the film is the marriage between Alfred and Alma; director Sacha Gervasi giving us the story that it was in fact very strained, and that it took collaborating on Psycho to bring them together again. (Perhaps not be taken as entirely biographical).

We are given two power-house performances from the leads, Hopkins and Mirren - and would expect nothing less. The make-up team definitely deserves a nod, as Anthony Hopkins is almost unrecognisbale as the famously difficult director - nailing not only the look, but also the sound of Hitchcock.

Ther eis fanatstic casting in James D’Arcy, who is uncanny as Anthony Perkins, the actor who played Norman Bates. However, I am afraid I was less than impressed with the dull Scarlett Johannson, who is either incapable, or just lazy - making no effort to transform herself into Janet Leigh. Just turning up and looking glamorous should not be enough for a career.

Hitchcock is an easy watch, and also an interesting insight into the man himself. Perhaps people unfamiliar with his work may be inspired to sit and watch some truly brilliant Hitchcock films.
