Mississippi Grind

Gerry (Ben Mendelsohn) is a talented poker player, but his gambling habit is getting the best of him. One day, he meets a charismatic young traveller named Curtis (Ryan Reynolds).

Deeming Curtis his lucky charm, Gerry convinces him that they should hit the road together. As they gamble their way down South toward a legendary high-stakes poker game in New Orleans, the trip's highs and lows unveil the duo's true character and motivation, and an undeniable bond forms between them.

An engaging tale of the ultimate anti-hero, Mississippi Grind is a contemporary road trip-come-gambling film that has a lot of depth, heart and a bloody great sense of humour. Soaking in the sights of unexpected friends’ trip, the Southern landscape is one without the gloss and glamour we come to expect from Hollywood - it has a somewhat gritty feel that serves as a snapshot into a gambling community that thrive within the Casinos, race-tracks, and front rooms of America.

Playing the somewhat odd-couple; Mendelsohn and Reynolds are jsut terrific - each excelling in their roles as low rollers Gerry and Curtis (respectively). Undoubtedly Reynolds' best work for years, it is, however, Ben Mendelsohn who steals the show by giving such a masterfully complex characterisation of a troubled man, that somehow manages to be endearing as he imbues the audience with a compassionate regard for Gerry’s plight.

An engaging, well-crafted all American movie; Mississippi Grind is beautifully heart-warming at it’s core. I would certainly recommend giving it a watch on your next trip to the cinema. Rating:
