Say When

Director Lynn Shelton (Your Sister’s Sister) has created an astute coming-of-age comedy, Say When that brings to light the somewhat modern phenomena, that is the ‘quarterlife crisis’.

28 year old Megan (Keira Knightley) is overeducated, and underemployed. Well and truly into adulthood with no career prospects, no particular motivation to think about her future and no one to relate to, Megan is comfortable hanging a few steps behind - while her friends check off milestones one by predictable one. When her high-school sweetheart (Mark Webber) proposes, Megan panics, and after a chance encounter with a group of teenagers, Megan escapes her life for a week, and hides out in the home of her new friend, 16-year old Annika (Chloë Grace Moretz), and her divorcée lawyer father Craig (Sam Rockwell).

Perhaps, an unchallenging watch, I found Say When to be utterly charming. These three well constructed characters find their lives intertwined in the most unconventional way, and the imperfect realities of modern day life, make for some brilliant laugh-out-loud, and equally, touching moments.

The cast has an easy chemistry together, but it is Keira Knightley who truly shines as Megan. She has made a refreshing departure from her usual stiff upper-lipped Brit. to a relatable ‘everyday’ American girl. Funny and endearing, I felt myself rooting for her wholeheartedly.

I think there is a generation that certainly can relate to Megan – finding their true direction in life, and not settling - falling into a career, or a marriage, just because that is what all your friends seem to be doing. To all ‘Megan’s’ out there – be brave! This film is a little slice of inspiration.
