Directed by Academy Award-nominee Tom McCarthy, Spotlight is a tense investigative dramatic-thriller, tracing the steps to one of the biggest cover-ups in modern times.

This riveting true story follows the Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe investigation that would rock the city, and cause a crisis in one of the world's oldest and most trusted institutions. When the newspaper's tenacious "Spotlight" team of reporters delves into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church, their yearlong investigation uncovers a decades-long cover-up at the highest levels of Boston's religious, legal, and government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world.

A lot of movies are based on incredible true stories, but what makes Spotlight different is that it is so incredible that it needs no embellishment. Fast paced, powerful and engaging, Spotlight’s matter-of-fact story telling is refreshing, and it’s strong ensemble cast (including Bill Pullman, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams) adds to the film’s authenticity. Much of the suspense comes from seeing the characters' slowly dawning realisation of just how big this story is as the pieces of the puzzle come together.

I found it hard to comprehend that this could be based on fact, making it, at times an eye opening and uncomfortable watch. Powerful, absorbing and deeply moving, Spotlight is almost certainly the best film I have seen in a long time, and it deserves recognition come Award Season. Rating:
