The Dressmaker

Based on the best-selling novel by Rosalie Ham, The Dressmaker is a bittersweet, comedy-drama set in early 1950s Australia. Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet), a beautiful and talented misfit, after many years working as a dressmaker in exclusive Parisian fashion houses, returns home to the tiny middle-of-nowhere town of Dungatar to right the wrongs of the past. Not only does she reconcile with her ailing, eccentric mother Molly (Judy Davis) and unexpectedly falls in love with the pure-hearted Teddy (Liam Hemsworth), but armed with her sewing machine and incredible sense of style, she transforms the women of the town and in doing so gets sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.

From the title I was expecting a serious, perhaps a slight snooze-fest of a film, so I was terribly surprised to met with with this madly boisterous, genre-shifting, period romp! Moorhouse's adaptation of Rosalie Ham's 2000 novel is visually breathtaking, and will certainly have audiences in stitches and moved in equal measure.

Hats off to the casting director, as this untraditional film boasts a fanatsticly talented ensemble cast - full of rich and detailed characterisations that fly off the screen - certainly teetering on the edge of chariacture, but somehow managing to remain in the realms of reality. Kate Winslet carries the film beautifully. As always, she gives an engaging and fully realised performance - and it has to be noted that her Austraian accent is perfection.

The whole film has a weird and manic energy, and I left feeling like I hadgeniunely experienced something new in cinema. I cannot recommend this bonkers and hugely enjoyable slice of Australiana more readily. Go and see it! Rating:
