The Way Way Back

Having won an Oscar for their adapted screenplay of The Descendants, Faxon and Rash prove once again that they are masters at producing real, engaging stories that manages to make you laugh one moment, and cry your eyes out the next….

The Way Way Back is a poignant and witty coming of age tale, follows14-year-old Duncan (Liam James) while he is on his summer holiday with his mother, Pam (Toni Collette), her overbearing boyfriend, Trent (Steve Carell), and his daughter, Steph (Zoe Levin). Having a tough time fitting in, the introverted Duncan finds an unexpected friend in gregarious Owen (Sam Rockwell), manager of the Water Wizz water park. Through his funny, clandestine friendship with Owen, Duncan slowly opens up to and begins to finally find his place in the world - all during a summer he will never forget

The Way Way Back does have a familiarity about it – reminding me of Adventureland. It certainly doesn't break the mold, but it does break your heart. If you fancy an alternative to the SuperHero Blockbuster this summer, then The Way, Way Back is it! A fresh well-etched drama-comedy about the awkwardness of adolescence, that is just wonderful.
